Reflection

This is my final 3D spacial and product design piece inspired by Judith Brown and Alexander Calmer. The composition is a developed recreation of the sputnik-like prototype I created based off of a drawing I did, which are all available on the previous page. During this process of moulding and bending the wire, I initially used my bare hands. Throughout this process, I wasn't able to achieve the circular and rounded edges as the wire kept on bending and making straight lines when I was using my hands. As a result, I resorted to using a thing pair of pliers and this was much easier to achieve those rounded edges that can be seen surrounding the structure. Furthermore, this wire mobile mimics the drawing I drew due to the fact that they are both a continuous line. The wire was not cut or connected with other wire pieces, therefore I gathered a huge bundle of wire and created this piece. It was challenging and at certain times I was tempted to cut the wire but that would defeat the entire point and concept of this mobile being continuous as I wanted to replicate the drawing as much as possible. In order to make the piece sturdy and not too fragile, I used the wire and wrapped it around itself several times in order to keep certain areas intact and in place. This can be seen on the outer ring of the structure where each of the petal-like shapes have loops of wire holding it still at the ends. In my opinion, this is an effective way of holding the shape up but also adds a level of detail in relation to the line as the wire is thin enough for the viewer to see each individual loop, which feeds into the continuous line theme of the model. Moreover, I am satisfied with this wire mobile however if I was given more time, I would've liked to add more parts in order to create interesting shadows when light is shone on it. When photographing this model, I expected for the variety of lines to create interesting shadows but none appeared, which was disappointing.
