Reflection

This is my developed mixed media painting referencing back to my A4 collage that is placed in the centre of the composition. The variety of materials included in my artwork range from acrylic paint, ink, watercolour, newsprint, receipts, oil pastels, masking tape, holographic paper, marker pen, different types of string and yarn and also leaves that I found from the group. As a consequence of using a large variation of materials, this created a very chaotic composition with an abscess of space in an abundance of colour. What I like most about this piece is the different textures, shapes and colours. Each specific material has their own individual section in the piece and is clearly evidenced and I used the materials in a way to show off their ability and unique pattern on the page. Furthermore, this can also be introduced as a split composition as the use of colour is split in half with the upper half of the painting is extremely vibrant and filled with bright colours such as pinks and yellows. However, the bottom of the composition is relatively monochromatic with shapes and lines using dark blues, blacks and greys and whites. This wasn't executed as well as I had imagined as I would've liked the split to be more obvious to the viewer. The use of the word 'shape' is what initially inspired my entire piece as my entire painting is covered with unique and abstracted shapes that have no sense to them but combine well together. In my opinion, I am really happy with the way that this came out as the use of materials creates a three-dimensional effect that enhances the linear aspect of the collage. The use of string is my favourite element due to the fact that the hanging effect creates a vertical emphasis that guides the viewer's gaze down the page. If I was given more time, I would enlarge this piece and work at a larger scale, perhaps A2 or even A1 and remove the collage and fill the page with expressive and free brush marks replicating the theme of shape and colour.
