Producing collages

Using our own materials, we were told to produce around 3 different collages combining two-dimensional objects together. The task was to explore and experiment our imagery and objects with a range of processes and visual strategies. From a magazine I collected from my house, I cut out specific images and words that stuck out to me the most and worked from there. The subject matter behind these included natural environments such as hills and water, cutting out figures to create an effective silhouette and more. I also incorporated recycled materials such as tin foil and newsprint in order to create a mixed media composition. When creating collages, I struggle to find a starting point and which piece to stick down first but once that stage in the process is complete, working around it I find rather enjoyable and almost easy as the ideas all of a sudden come to my imagination. The first collage on the left was my first experiment and was completed in a short amount of time of 3 minutes and this was rather rushed. I focused on the idea of line and repositioning of an image, which can be seen with the figures head being cut around and then separated from the rest of the image. I find the small space between creates an interesting effect of detachment but it also adds to the theme of line as the negative space creates a thick geometric line. For the central collage, I initially focused on collecting pieces that resonated with water and which were blue. By including tin foil, this adds to the glistening effect that sunlight does when it is reflected onto a large body of water. This correlates nicely with the harshness and dark shades of the rocky landscape situated directly next to it. The landscape used to have a figure running but to create a sense of depth and a silhouette, I used a craft knife to cut out the frame of the body leaving a space and then filled it with black drawing ink to add a sense of mystery and interpretation for the viewer. Furthermore, the last collage is my favourite and the one that I continue and pursue onto the following painting task. Combining the unique shapes and colours together was entertaining to me as incorporating bright and vibrant colours to an artwork in my opinion is very effective as it catches the viewers attention instantly. The pieces I removed from a magazine already had an artistic flare hence the obvious brushstrokes, which helped elevate the sense of painting. I remade this through painting, which can be seen below.
